It's official: Warmest January on record in the Lower Mainland. The mean temperature at Abbotsford Airport was 7.0°C, easily smashing the old record of 6.3°C set in 1994. The average daily minimum of 4.3°C also breaks the record of 3.9°C set in 2006, but our daily maximum of 9.7°C is just shy of the record 9.8°C set in 1981. Vancouver broke all three of their records, with readings of 7.2°C, 4.4°C and 9.9°C, respectively. Records go back to 1937 in Vancouver, and 1944 in Abbotsford. Not to be outdone, Seattle also experienced their warmest January since records began in 1891. A persistent El Nino pattern continues to send stormy weather into California, leaving BC with mild, showery conditions and plenty of sunny breaks. There are no indications of a return to normal conditions in the long range outlooks.
